I started Robot House for two reasons: as an excuse to do the thing I love all of the time, and to help others become more confident hobbyists.

The Story

For about as long as I can remember, tabletop games have been the way I connect to art and to others. When I was 12, a less-than-successful attempt by friends to include me in their Magic the Gathering hobby landed me in a local game store. I hated the cards (still do), but found some Warhammer 40k models on display and was suddenly sure I needed to collect and paint as many as I could. Even though it would be years until I learned to play the actual game, I was hooked.

It was the artistic possibility that drew me in – the appeal of painting and building my own narratives – but it’s the unique collective storytelling of gaming that has kept me here ever since, creating worlds, building friendships, and finding a place to belong at the table. Now that I’m a father raising my kids in an increasingly detached world, I’m more aware than ever of the value of face-to-face gaming, even if those faces are masked or virtual for a while.

I started Robot House for two reasons: as an excuse to do the thing I love all of the time, and to help others become more confident hobbyists. My first models were awful – I had the right ideas, but no clue what tools to use to bring them together. Thanks to the Internet, today’s beginners have access to all of the knowledge it took me a couple decades to find through magazines and pestering the experts who hung out at my local game store. The right tools bring excitement about a game to life, and to that end, Robot House is more than just a commission painting service.

We’re here to build community through virtual and in-person events (COVID regulations permitting), to demo games and inspire creativity, and to make sure the generation we’re raising doesn’t disappear behind their screens.

Here’s how you can get involved!
